BENVENUTO!

It’s been a big month in Victoria and what a mixed bag it was. An incredible turnout in Carlton lead to one of the best Auto Italian Icons events we have seen in the last few years, whilst the Phillip Island Historics saw some incredible cars attend from overseas including the monster, Maserati-engined Cooper, the only one of its type, raced in period by Roy Salvadori. For F1 fans and Renault/Ricciardo fans in particular, it was a race better spent under the doona, despite a text book drive by Valtteri Bottas for Mercedes to take the flag.  As usual, Melbourne turned on an amazing event with the highest crowd numbers since 2005, with more than 234,000 enjoying the sunshine. Not to be outdone, Sydney saw the inaugural Sydney Harbour Concours, an invitation-only event showcasing 30 cars in and around the historic Lyndesay estate in Darling Point. By all accounts this too was another delightful day of “champagne-fuelled” classics and credit must go to its organizer, James Nicholls and his team.

Most recently we saw the staging of the 64th annual Kalorama Rally, Australia’s oldest classic car event in the beautiful Dandenong Ranges. This year saw its largest turnout in years and great weather meant a big crowd enjoying in particular, a fantastic display of Veterans.

Now our attention turns to April, and the big event of the month is Auto Italia in Canberra, with around 10,000 classic car fans descending upon the Epic Arena. It’s sure to be a great day and we wish safe travels to all of you attending from around Australia.
More news about Motorclassica this month, and all things considered it feels right to take on a more Italian theme. It’s also worth reminding you that ticket sales go on sale in April too, so be sure to book early and get the weekend into your calendar.

Happy motoring,

The Motorclassica team

Following on from a successful racing career in both motorcycles and cars, Carlo Abarth founded Abarth & C in 1949. With five 204A Cisitalia sports cars, Abarth rebuilt and christened his own eponymous brand, enlisting the skills of drivers such as Nuvolari, Cortese and Taruffi to assure a string of successes for the Squadron Abarth racing team.

Producing aftermarket performance products for Fiat, Lancia and Simca, Abarth began its famous association with Fiat in 1952 when it built the Abarth 1500 Biposto on Fiat mechanicals. The rest is history, with marques including Porsche, Simca, Alfa Romeo, Autobianchi and even Yamaha all undergoing the Abarth treatment.

As Motorclassica celebrates the 70th anniversary of this remarkable brand, we will unearth some truly rare examples including one-offs, prototypes and works race cars. Signore e signori, avvia i tuoi moto!

The love for Italian marques has never been stronger than at this year’s Auto Italia. Attracting hundreds of cars from all over Australia, this event has become “auto centrale” for all things Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini, Alfa Romeo, Lancia, Fiat… in fact any brand who can safely put an “isti” its name. This year, Motorclassica is proud to partner with Auto Italia as we join to promote the classic car movement around the country.

Auto Italia Canberra will take place at Exhibition Park in Mitchell, ACT on Sunday 7 April. Tickets are only $5 for adults or $10 for families.  For more information visit www.autoitaliacanberra.com.
