We won't ask your age, Saturday Night Auction, Future Lab, Schools program, and more!
The world is truly in the thick of classic concours season, with Pebble Beach just behind us, and the major UK-based events at Hampton Court and Blenheim Palace coming up hot on its heels. If cars could sprout wings and fly they surely would as they are sent around the northern hemisphere at a frenzied place to compete against other glamorous opponents. Here at home, we have a little more time as 130 lucky collectors finish their restorations and add their final touches to cars coming from all corners of the nation to show at our 10th annual Australian International Concours d’Elegance at Motorclassica.
Tickets are on sale now, so be sure to get in early to avoid the queues, and follow us on social media for all the most up to date news.
See you in October.
The Motorclassica team
THE GRAND DAME OF AUSTRALIAN MOTORSPORTS
At 115 years old, Geoffrey Mitton’s 1904 De Dion Bouton Model V Tonneau is the oldest car at this year’s Motorclassica. All the way from South Australia, our Chief Judge John Virgo spotted this little beauty at the 2018 Bay to Birdwood where it was a finalist for the second event in a row. With a French-built chassis and English body, she made her way to South Australia in 1904 where she raced in various races including the Heavy Car Race (Morphetville), the Easter Reliability Trial and Norton Summit Hill Climb. Rediscovered in a shed behind the Adelaide Exhibition Building in 1934 it has been in the same family ever since. Never restored but fastidiously maintained, it has appeared in films, rallies and the 100th anniversary London to Brighton Run, and appears for the first time at Motorclassica this year.
STEP UP TO THE PLATE WITH SHANNONS AUCTIONS
Shannons Auctions and VicRoads Custom Plates once again combine forces to present the ‘Rare Heritage Number Plate Auction’, for the second year running in which 30 Victorian heritage number plates will be up for grabs. Taking place on Saturday night as part of After Five, our second plate auction is set to aim high after setting records last year with the sale of plate number “911”. Consignments are still open, so if you have a rare plate to sell, please contact Christophe Boribon at Shannons at email@example.com
THERE’S SOMETHING COOKING IN FUTURE LAB
While our Live Restoration Theatre focuses on the lost and dying trades, FutureLab shines a light on how new technology can be developed and utilised in the maintenance and restoration of classic cars, while offering insight into the future of the automobile as we know it.
Featuring the work of universities, TAFEs and private enterprise, FutureLab dovetails into our Friday Schools Program in which up to 400 early high school students explore the lifestyle and careers around classic and vintage motoring. For those not participating in the Schools Program, FutureLab remains open to the public all weekend. For more information click here.
KIDS CAN EXPLORE CAREER AND LIFESTYLE OPTIONS
With a shortage of applicants for apprenticeship programs there is a growing demand for skilled workers in a range of trades, including automotive trades. Of even greater concern for those who count classic cars and motorcycles as their passion, is that changes in automotive technology means that some ancient and highly specialized trade skills are slowly being lost as older mechanics, coach-builders, trimmers and woodworkers retire from business. Friday’s Schools Program is a fun, hands-on introduction to the key trades associated with the restoration and preservation of classic and exotic vehicles, presented by some of the impressive young artisans currently at work within the industry. Entry is free for students in years 8 – 10 and accompanying teaching staff, and includes entry into all areas of Motorclassica. For more information on how to get your school or class involved, contact Samantha Bickham at firstname.lastname@example.org.
CLASSIC & SPORTS CAR PARTNERS UP WITH CLUB SANDWICH AWARDS
Classic and Sports Car magazine, the top selling classic car magazine in the world, joins Motorclassica this year as the presenting partner of our weekend Club Sandwich Awards. Our newest presenting partner already sponsors a number of major British events including the Concours of Elegance at Hampton Court and the annual British Car Club Awards and has now added our event to its slate of partnerships. The Club Sandwich Awards are presented on both Saturday and Sunday to the Best Club Display and Best Presented Car as judged by members of the Motorclassica Curatorial Committee.
60 YEARS – 60 MINIS
Motorclassica thrives on the work of its army of volunteers and this year we are particularly excited by the 60 Years – 60 Minis display at this year’s Club Sandwich. Curated by Rosie and Dan White, the 60th anniversary display represents a full timeline of the British marque in all its understated glory. What’s even more fun is the owners of the 60 Minis will display their cars in matching period outfits, from the swinging 60s through to the present day. It’s all about the Minis at this year’s Club Sandwich so be sure to join in the fun. Vintage costume optional!
INTRODUCING BENTLEY SPECIALIST & SPONSOR, DAVID EKBERG
When it comes to Bentleys, few Australians have the passion that David Ekberg has for the marque. After all, he has been selling Bentleys and Rolls-Royces exclusively for almost 35 years. You could say he loves Bentley more than Bentley itself, so when we were looking for sponsors for the Bentley Centenary class, David stepped up to the plate to present this very special and highly competitive award. David Ekberg Pty Ltd is the only business in Australia specialising in the sale of used and classic Bentley and Rolls-Royce motor cars. David’s knowledge is extensive and his business offers a wide range of services to prospective buyers. For more information, visit David and his team on stand #307 on the ground floor.
