We promise you, Motorclassica has never been bigger, and you will not want to miss it. Tickets are available online now or at the door. But for a taste of what’s to come, read on.
See you next week.
The Motorclassica team
It’s no secret that this year we celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Australian Grand Prix in a display that’s sure to blow the socks off any race fan. Not only does our tribute feature 24 sensational Australian Grand Prix winning and placing cars, it features cars driven by seven World Champions (Brabham, Clark, Phil Hill, Graham Hill, Hunt, Jones and Piquet) who between them won 13 World F1 Championships. This is arguably the greatest collection of Australian Grand Prix cars ever assembled anywhere in the World and an incredible tribute to the 90 year history of the Australian Grand Prix.
Shannons Auctions and VicRoads Custom Plates have combined forces to present the ‘Rare Heritage Number Plate Auction’. The first-ever number plate auction to be held at Motorclassica will see a selection of more than 30 Victorian heritage number plates up for grabs. Among the most sought-after plates to cross the auction block at Motorclassica will be the iconic ‘911’, which is expected to be highly prized by both Porsche enthusiasts and collectors. In the one family ownership for 35 years, the ‘911’ plate is being offered for the first time during that period.
Other notable number plates up for auction include ‘464’ ‘747’, ‘906’, ’88.999’, ‘8.765’, ‘2.277’ and ‘3.142’, which is expected to generate a lot of interest as it’s the well-known Toorak postcode. All five and six digital number plates are being sold No Reserve.
All lots to go under the hammer can be viewed on the Shannons website as they become confirmed:
This year Motorclassica will be car launch heaven with six new models officially revealed to the public for the first time. Beginning with Mercedes-Benz on opening night, guests will get a first look at the 2018 face-lift of one of its icon models, along with a selection of cars from its heritage collection. Then once the doors open on Friday, it’s all about the sports cars with the official launch of the new Alpine A110, the Ford Bullitt Mustang, and the first official Melbourne unveilings of both McLaren’s Senna supercar and the 600LT. Rounding out the group is the long-awaited Australian delivery of the Lamborghini Urus SUV.
Both Mercedes-Benz and Ford, along with Indian motorcycles, will be offering visitors free test drive experiences in a range of models, so be sure to get in early for a chance to take the wheel.
Once again visitors will get to have their say at this year’s Australian International Concours d’Elegance. With more than two dozen brand new restorations across six states, and a swathe of rarely seen exotics and race cars, the competition is bound to be tight for the annual People’s Choice Awards, sponsored by Custom Plates. Last year it was a 1973 De Tomaso Pantera which won the hearts of voters so it’s any guess which stunning car will take home the cutlery this year.
Up for grabs for one lucky voter is the chance to win a Vicroads Custom Plates prize package, which includes dinner for two and a voucher for your own custom plate, valued at approximately $1,000. Be sure to register your at the iPads on the gallery level and then vote for your favourite at one of the ground floor voting lounges for your chance to win.
Shows like Motorclassica don’t happen without the help of a dedicated crew of volunteers, and every year, we are proud to host a number of clubs and individuals who offer their time to keep the wheels of this big machine moving. It’s not too late to register your interest this year and places are still available in a variety of event roles, particularly for people with good knowledge of classic and vintage cars.
To register to volunteer for this year’s Motorclassica, please contact Mathew Green at email@example.com.
