Motorclassica Call for Entries, 90 Years of Grand Prix, 70 Years of Harley-Davidson Panhead and more

It seems like only yesterday that we closed the door on Motorclassica and said goodbye for another year. And what a show that was, setting records on a whole range of different fronts, the highlights being our celebrations of Ferrari, Lancia, Holden and Moto Guzzi.

This year we have coming roaring out onto the track with a whole grid worth of new celebration classes that will be simply unmissable. It’s been 90 years since Arthur Waite won the first officially-acknowledged Australian Grand Prix (despite the recent discovery of another event of the same name held a year earlier) and we cannot wait to open our doors on one of the biggest collections of Australian Grand Prix winners and place-getters ever seen in the World – from humble beginnings at Phillip Island to the Tasman series and the heady days of the World-championship race in Adelaide there is literally something for everyone. And if that’s not enough to get your pistons pumping, you also have the chance to set your own hot lap of the Albert Park circuit on the Mercedes-Benz scale model slot car track!  But that’s not all. Add to that an incredible display celebrating the sensational coachwork of the Art Deco period; Cadillac, the USA’s answer to Rolls-Royce; a selection of pre-OPEC oil crisis American supercars; the quirky beauty of micro cars and tributes to the Harley-Davidson Panhead and Triumph Bonneville and the Royal Exhibition Building will be bursting at the seems.

Read on for an early rundown of what you can expect at this year’s Motorclassica and stay turned for more news and the latest announcements over the coming months.

If you have a special car or motorcycle at home and have ever wondered what it might be like to experience the VIP treatment as an entrant at Motorclassica, then be sure to get your application in now. We are still looking for top flight entries for this year’s Australian International Concours d’Elegance, particularly in the Vintage and Veteran classes. On the other hand, if your car or motorcycle isn’t quite concours but is exceptionally rare, valuable or has a fascinating provenance, then we would also like to consider it for our display-only classes. Cars and motorcycles that entered from 2010 to 2014 are now eligible to reapply so don’t delay.

From humble beginnings at Phillip Island as the 100 Miles Road Race, the Australian Grand Prix has gone on to become one of the highlights of the international Formula 1 racing calendar. Despite only becoming part of the FIA Formula One World Championship in 1985, the Grand Prix has hosted a multitude of famous names and winners including Whiteford, Davison, Jones, Moss, Brabham, McLaren, Hill, Stewart, Clark, Amon, Prost, Senna, Berger, Mansell, Schumacher and more.

Now more than 300,000 fans attend the 4-day racing festival which showcases Melbourne and Australia to millions of viewers around the globe. There will be no greater display of Australian Grand Prix cars anywhere in the World than at this year’s Motorclassica!

For the motorcycle enthusiasts, not one but two big celebrations this year, commencing with the anniversary of the legendary Panhead engine of Harley-Davidson, featuring a timeline of these historic machines dating back to 1948 and running through 1965. Our curators tell us that this is likely to be the most important collection of Panheads displayed in Australia this year, so if you are a Harley fan, you won’t want to miss it.

If you haven’t seen the exceptional work of Mike Harbar, then check out our new Motorclassica poster, featuring our celebration marque, Cadillac. Hailing from the UK but calling Melbourne his home since 2000, Mike’s background in industrial design has no doubt given him the edge that makes him renowned as one of the World’s great automotive artists. Working with pencil and watercolour he has produced commissioned artwork for magazines, car specialists, club events and private collectors around the World.

Part of the Motorclassica family since our first event in 2010, Mike finally joins the enviable list of artists to create the annual Motorclassica poster. Be sure to meet him this year at Motorclassica, or check out his website at

So you’re a motoring enthusiast. Maybe you own a classic car or motorcycle, or maybe you know someone who does. If so, then chances are you have a story you tell about those classics – something you share around the bar, at club meets or at family get togethers. Perhaps you have a story about your own collection, a recent restoration, an exciting barn find or a treasure that has been in your garage for half of your life.  Perhaps you have recently completed a major tour, a great rally or a targa event. In any case, we would love you to share your story and your photos with us.
Prizes are up for grabs for every story published, so grab your keyboard and start writing. To be in the mix, send your 70 – 100 word short story to Cathy at The first successful entry will be published in the June newsletter.
